Interesting. I'd have gone in the opposite direction, ruling that the
increased chance to hit comes in some way from the sword's increased
responsiveness to the wielder -- although the shadow/star energy of
the sword is harmless to others (so the damage-causing effect goes away).

Now if my GM wanted to be a sadistic bastard and rule otherwise,
that's his prerogative. You could probably justify it either way. I
always felt that Shadow mages had an intriguing set of spells in the
first place, so don't feel that either ruling would make much
difference in how fun the class is.

However, I haven't played DQ for years, and haven't found any group of
players since I moved to Sydney.
